SRSP Saraswati Canal – Complete Details

SRSP canal also known as Sri Ram Sagar Floow Canal is a 130 km long gravity canal from Sriram Sagar Project, Mupkal Mandal, Nizamabad District to Mid Manair Dam, Manwada Village, Karimnagar District, Telangana.

History of SRSP canal

SRSP Canal was initiated as part of Sriram Sagar stage II. The foundation stone was laid by former prime minister P. V. Narasimha Rao in 1991. The surplus water from Sriram Sagar Project can be taken into Mid Manair Dam with the SRSP canal. This can be used to utilize another 25 tmcft and can also be used to fill the Lower Manair Dam at Karimnagar City.

In the year 2010 in the month of July, the canal construction was completed. In Aug 2010, the canal was opened after a couple of trials. Currently, Mid Manair is under construction. So, the canal is presently used to fill Lower Manair Dam. The construction of the SRSP canal was done in such a way as to discharge a maximum capacity of 22000 cusecs water. It means the canal can carry 50 tmcft of water into Mid Manair (capacity 26 tmcft) and Lower Manair (capacity 24 tmcft) reservoirs in just 25 days at its full canal capacity are 2 tmcft per day.

SRSP Canal remodeling

SRSP canal’s full supply level is 1,070 feet (326 m) with a full reservoir level of 1,091 feet (333 m) of Sriram Sagar reservoir. So the flood canal can be used only if the water level of the reservoir is more than 1070 feet.

As the water level in the Sriram Sagar reservoir is not more than 1070 ft., the flood canal is not in use for most of the years. Yellampalli Lift Canal from Yellampalli Project is under construction. So, the water is lifted into the canal at Gangadhara to feed Mid Manair Dam.

The re-engineering of this dysfunctionality has to be done to reverse its flow direction by raising its bank levels. This can be achieved by installing low head high flow concrete volute pumps at major reservoir water outlets.

As the Godavari floods waters during monsoon months, the water from the Pranahita Chevella lift can be stored. The water can be stored in the gross storage capacity of the Sriram Sagar reservoir to use in the dry months. When water is not available in the lower Godavari basin during dry seasons, the water stored in the reservoir can be sent back into Kakatiya Canal by gravity from the Sriram Sagar reservoir.

Moreover, the remodeled SRSP flood canal can be used for supplying water for irrigating nearly 300,000 acres. The single lift 96 MWC from the Myadaram tank to the SRSP flood flow canal should be split into two lifts (76 + 20 MWC) via the Kakatiya canal to facilitate remodeling in the future.

The re-engineering of this canal will be done similarly to modifications carried out to the ancient Grand canal under the Eastern Route project of the South to North Water Transfer in China
