Jatprole also called Jataprolu village is located in Kollapur Mandal, Nagarkurnool District, Telangana. Jataprolu is popular for two temples known as Madana Gopala Swamy Temple and a group of Shiva temples including the famous Agasthyeswara Swamy.
During the construction of the Srisailam dam, the temples were moved to Jetprole from the villages of Malleswaram and Manchalakota.
Madana Gopala Swamy temple
Madana Gopala Swamy temple, also known as Venu Gopala Swamy temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple was built by Rajas of Jetprole during the 16th century. Lord Sri Krishna is one of the ten Incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Lord Sri Krishna is also called Venu Gopala Swamy. When Lord Krishna is represented along with Rukmini and Satyabhama, he is called Madana Gopala.
The temple possesses a huge gopuram, a spacious Sabhamandapa, Antarala, and a sanctum. The pillars in the Sabhamandapa are beautifully carved in the Vijayanagara architecture.
Madana Gopala Swamy Jatara of Jataprole
The word Jataprole means Jatayuvu Kshetra as per the ancient tales. Jataprole has been mentioned in the Madanagopala Mahathmyam of Vishnu Rahasya Khandam of Bhavishyothara Purana.
During the 12th Century A.D., Jataprole has been mentioned in a stone inscription by Malla Naidu, son of Recharla Bethi Reddy and Eurka Sanamma. During the 16th century, Vijayanagara Kings gave it to Surabhi Kings. The Mantapas and Gopuras for the Jataprole and Manchala Katta temples were constructed by Madhavarayalu of Vijayanagar King.
Some other famous temples of Lord Krishna in Nagarkurnool District are Kalki Gopala Swamy of Kalwakurthy Mandal, Sri Venu Gopala Swamy of KesampetVillage in Nagar Kurnool Mandal, Sri Madana Gopala Swamy of Jataprole of Kollapur.
As per the History of Mahabubnagar by B.N. Sastry, Mallanaidu from the 14th Generation of Jataprole Sansthan built the Madanagopala Swamy temple at Jataprole and started Brahmotsavam. The glory of the temple was for 400 years.
On 15th February 1989, Madana Gopala Swamy temple was shifted from its original place and re-constructed on the banks of the Krishna River. In the vicinity of the Madana Gopala Swamy temple, there are a group of 5 Shiva temples. And, at a distance of 300 meters from Madana Gopala Swamy temple, there is also a group of 20 Shiva temples.
All the Shiva temples were originally built during the 10th century. But they were shifted from nearby villages during the Srisailam dam construction. Some of these temples’ architecture has wonderfully built mandapas, pillars, and gopurams.
Kotharu Bhavanacharyalu has written Thirumangayalvaru Charitha and Thirunagari Narasimhaiah a Yakshagana on Lord Sri Venkateswara. In the Telugu Month of Maghamasa, a nine Days Brahmotsavam Festival will be held for Sri Venkateswara Swamy. Thousands of Pilgrims from the surrounding villages visit the temple during the festival.
Agasthyeswara Swamy Temple
Agasthyeswara Swamy temple is an ancient temple whose history roots back to the 10th & 16th centuries A.D. At the temple, festivals like Sivarathri, Kartiha Pournami, Masa Sivarathri, and Toli Ekadasi are celebrated with great fervor. After the construction of the Srisailam dam, when the villagers had fear of floods of Krishna water, the temple was shifted to Jetprole. At a distance of 15 km from Kollapur, the Madana Gopala Swamy temple was built by the Rajas of Jetprole during the 16th century A.D. The architecture of the temple is remarkable after all these years with beautiful sculptures adorned on the pillars, beams, and walls of the temple.
