One of the first signs of noticing that the years have passed is aging skin. As we age, our skin dries up, gets thin, and loses its resilience. Our skin loses elasticity as we age because collagen (protein) production slows down.

The same skincare which we used in our 20s and 30s does not work the same in our 40s. It is very important to know the correct skincare routine to make your skin glow and retain its natural and youthful texture.

In this article, we are going to list some tips which can protect and reduce the aging process of the skin. 

Apply a generous amount of sunscreen

Sunscreen is no doubt one of the most important ingredients to be used in the skincare routine. Exposure to sunlight can damage our skin barrier and result in premature greying in the long run. Hyperpigmentation and fine lines are the results of excessive exposure to the sun. So it is important to apply a generous amount of sunscreen with at least 30 spf and abroad spectrum UVA/UVB protection when you step out of your house in the sunlight. Another important thing to keep in our mind is to reapply the sunscreen every 4 hours. 

Moisturize your skin

It is very important to apply a layer of moisturizer on your body to seal the moisture. Look for a moisturizer that contains ingredients like dimethicone, glycerine, Mineral oil, hyaluronic acid, etc. These ingredients have the property to retain the moisture present in your skin for longer periods of time. Do not forget to apply moisturizer to your face as it is the most important step. Choose the right kind of moisturizer for your skin type be it could be dry, oily, or combination skin. 

Take short baths and showers

Taking a quick 5-minute shower can help you hydrate your skin. But staying in the shower for longer periods which is more than 10 minutes can remove the moisture present in your skin.

Always take shower With warm water or cold water

Taking a hot water bath is a very bad idea as it strips away the moisture and essential oils present in your skin. It is always recommended to take bath in a lukewarm water or cold water to keep your skin condition healthy.

Always use a mild and gentle cleanser

Always keep in mind to use a mild and gentle cleanser that is free from strong fragrances, alcohol, and parabens. Strong cleansers with sulfate and parabens can strips away the essential moisture and mineral oils present in your skin thereby making your skin dry and flaky. Also, you can use cleansers that are loaded with anti-aging ingredients like multi-peptides and hyaluronic acid.

Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol

Apart from the ill health condition caused by the excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking, it is also harmful to the skin. Smoking can reduce blood flow and this causes premature wrinkles on the skin.

Include retinoids in your skincare routine

Retinoids are the derived form of vitamin A. Retinoids are considered excellent ingredients for anti-aging skin care routines. They have the ability to increase collagen production and plump up the skin thereby making it look youthful and glowing.

Also, retinoids cause skin cell regeneration which can improve your overall skin appearance and texture. But it is important to start with a small number of retinoids once a week on your skin. Once your skin improves its tolerance to these products, you can incorporate them slowly into your daily care routine.

Stay hydrated

Drinking a sufficient amount of water is essential for maintaining good skin. Consuming enough water helps in maintaining the hydration of the skin thereby improving the skin condition and decreasing the anti-aging signs.

Consume nutritious food

To maintain healthy skin, not only tropical creams but also treating it from the inside is quite essential. Consuming foods that are rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties can help us maintain good skin conditions in the long run. Some of the foods with these properties are Green tea, olive oil, Salmon, avocados, pomegranate, flax seeds, fresh fruits, vegetables, Pumpkin seeds, green leafy vegetables, bell peppers, broccoli, etc.
