The First Woman President of India: Pratibha Devisingh Patil
Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil who was born on the 19th of December in the year 1934 is an Indian politician and lawyer who served as the 12th president of India from 25th July 2007 to 2015 July 2012.

Pratibha Patil was the first female President of India and a member of the Indian National Congress. Before serving India as the President, Pratibha Patil served India as the governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007.
Pratibha Patil’s early life
Pratibha Patil was born to Narayan Rao Patil on 19th December 1934 in Nandgaon village in the British raj Indian district of Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India.
Pratibha Patil completed her schooling at RR Vidyalaya, Jalgaon, and later she pursued her master’s degree in political science and economics from Mooljee College, Jalgaon.
She has also obtained a bachelor of laws (LLB) degree from Government Law College, Mumbai. Pratibha Patil was a bright student since her childhood and she was also very enthusiastic about co-curricular activities.
Pratibha Patil’s Professional Career
Pratibha Patil pursued her professional career as a lawyer at Jalgaon district court while she was fully immersed in various social activities for the upliftment of poor and marginalized women.
Some of her social works to uplift the condition of women in society is:
- Pratibha Patil had set up hostels for working women in Mumbai and Delhi.
- She has opened an engineering college at Jalgaon for rural youth.
- Pratibha Patil has opened the Charitable Trust to take care of various welfare activities for the development of women.
- Pratibha Patil has organized music, computer, and sewing classes for the poor and needy women in Amravati, Maharashtra.
The political career of Pratibha Patil
Pratibha Patil for the first time contested and won the election of Maharashtra state legislature from Jalgaon Assembly Constituency at a very young age of 27 years.
After that, Pratibha Patil was continuously elected four times as MLA from the Edlabad constituency until 1985.
From 1985 to 1990 Pratibha Patil served India as a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha.
Later in the general elections from the Amravati constituency, Pratibha Patil was elected as a member of parliament to the 10th Lok Sabha in the year 1991.
One amazing thing about Pratibha Patil is that she has not failed even in a single election that she has contested till the last election of her Political career.
She was appointed as the 24th governor of Rajasthan in November 2004. She was the first woman to be elected as the governor of that office.
Finally, Pratibha Patel became India’s first woman president on July 25th, 2007 with a majority of approximately two-thirds of the votes. Pratibha Patil was renowned as the most merciful president for 30 years since 1981.
Mrs. Pratibha Patil also became the first woman commander in chief of the Indian armed forces by the time she took charge as the President of India.
During her tenure as the President of India, Pratibha Patil has visited the border many times to have a deep understanding of the issues and to motivate the soldiers.
