Academy Awards are one of the biggest platforms that provide recognition to movies worldwide for their best cinematic work. Open till 2021, there are only three Indian films that have been nominated for the Academy Awards. Recently for Oscar 2023, the Gujarati film ‘The Chello Show’ has been announced as India’s official entry to the Oscars.
However, the results are yet to be finalized for the final nominations to be announced. Indian films are generally nominated for Oscars under the category of Academy Award for Best International feature film recognizing the talent and the impact that it leaves on the audience. In this article, we have listed the Indian movies that are nominated for the Oscars so far.
1. Mother India (1957)

Mother India was the first ever Indian film that was nominated for Oscar for best International feature film. The film cast includes Rajkumar, Nargis, Sunil Dutt, and Rajendra Kumar was directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie Mother India was the remake of an earlier film Aurat which was released in 1940. The storyline of the movie is about a village woman Radha who struggles to raise her sons in the absence of her husband while surviving against a cunning money lender.
Mother India remains one of the greatest Indian Box office successes even today if we take inflation into count. Apart from being nominated for the Oscars, the film also received the Filmfare Best film award and the actor Nargis and the director Mehboob Khan received the best actress and the best director prizes respectively.

2. Salaam Bombay (1988)

Salaam Bombay is an Indian drama film directed, Co-written, and Co-produced by Meera Nair which was nominated as the second film for the Oscar. The storyline of the film revolves around the children living in the slums in Mumbai. The movie received critical appraisal after its premiere on May 11th, 1988 at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival.

3. Lagaan (2001)

Lagaan is a Hindi language sports drama film written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film stars Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh in the lead roles. The storyline is based on the Era during the late Victorian period during India’s colonial British Raj when the residents of the villages are burdened with high taxes and several years of drought. The villagers have to learn a game that is unknown to them and competes with the Britishers and wins against them. Lagaan is the third film that is nominated for the Oscars.
4. Writing with fire

The film ‘Writing with Fire’ is about the journalism of the Dalit women leading the newspaper Khabar Lahariya. The film shows the transition they take from 14 years of print journalism to digital journalism using cell phones. Writing with Fire is the first feature documentary from India to receive an Oscar nomination for best documentary feature.
