The Met Gala has been resurrected after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus. While the show was held on a smaller scale than normal, the Met Gala will return to its regular schedule and size in 2022. Even so, this year’s Met Gala featured a dazzling array of outfits and fashion statements, with the theme of “American Independence.”
Several celebrities used the opportunity to experiment with retro fashion while others chose to focus on a particular piece of their country’s long history and incorporate it into their outfits.
Designer Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour are the evening’s Honorary Chairs. Actor Timothée Chalamet, poet Amanda Gorman, tennis player Naomi Osaka, and Billie Eilish, the youngest woman in history, are their co-chairs.

In a recent interview with British Vogue, Billie Eilish stated that she was particularly inspired by holiday Barbie and that she has been exploring the retro, pinup idea. Oscar de la Renta created her peach gown, which is a reference to an old-school ball gown with a low-cut tulle corset.
